Safety hints about the base of tower cranes
Recently, several holding down bolts for fixing a tower crane onto its base were found fractured at a construction site. For ensuring the stability of a tower crane, the Labour Department calls on duty holders to pay attention to the following:
- designing, checking and certifying the base of a tower crane, including its holding down bolts, by professional engineers;
- checking and certifying holding down bolts and nuts to meet design requirements, and doing non-destructive test for holding down bolts connecting main structural parts;
- tightening of nuts to holding down bolts using a torque wrench in accordance with the requirements set out by the professional engineer and the manufacturer; and
- checking the conditions of holding down bolts during weekly periodical inspections, in addition to the routine checks at the beginning of each working day.
