Jurisdictional Limit of the Minor Employment Claims Adjudication Board increases

The Minor Employment Claims Adjudication Board (MECAB) was established under the Minor Employment Claims Adjudication Board Ordinance (Cap. 453) to provide a simple, quick and inexpensive service to adjudicate employment claims arising from disputes of statutory or contractual rights of employment.

In accordance with the Minor Employment Claims Adjudication Board Ordinance (Amendment of Schedule) Notice 2021, with effect from 17 September 2021, the jurisdiction of MECAB is increased from a claim amount not exceeding $8,000 per claimant to not exceeding $15,000 per claimant, while maintaining the maximum number of claimants per claim at 10.  Any employment claims above the jurisdictional limit of MECAB will be adjudicated by the Labour Tribunal.

The amendment only applies to a claim for which the right of action arises wholly or partly on or after 17 September 2021. The jurisdiction of MECAB is still confined to a claim not exceeding $8,000 per claimant if the right of action arose wholly before 17 September 2021.
