In 2000, seven pieces of labour-related legislation were enacted, as
follows:

To restore the protection accorded to employees during the red
rainstorm warnings under the Employees' Compensation Ordinance (ECO). |

Employees' Compensation (Amendment) (No.2) Ordinance 2000 |
- To Improve the system of settling compensation claims for
death under the ECO.
- To amend the penalty clauses of the ECO to raise the level
of fines for certain offences and to clarify the criminal liabilities
of principal contractors under the ordinance.

Employment(Amendment) Ordinance 2000 |
To clarify that the taking part by an employee in a strike is
not a lawful ground for an employer to terminate the employee's
contract of employment without notice or payment in lieu. |

Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Amendment) Ordinance 2000 |
To amend the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance and
relevant regulations to allow the Commissioner for Labour to take
out prosecution against proprietors and contractors for failure
to meet the notification requirement within 6 months after the concerned
establishment is discovered or has come to the notice of the Commissioner
for Labour. |

Resolution of the Legislative Council under section 7 of the Factories
and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance - Factories and Industrial
Undertakings (Loadshifting Machinery) Regulation |
To require operators of loadshifting machines to receive safety
training and to possess a certificate. |

Resolution of the Legislative Council under section 36 of the
Pneumoconiosis (Compensation) Ordinance |
To lower the rate of levy from 0.3% to 0.25%. |

Resolution of the Legislative Council under section 40 of the
Pneumoconiosis (Compensation) Ordinance |
To increase the maximum amount of funeral expenses from $16,000
to $35,000. |
